The four basic things humans need to survive according to Man vs. Wild extreme adventurer Bear Grylls. For those of us who don’t often find ourselves lost in the arid sands of the desert or shivering on a snowy peak, it’s easy to lose sight of the true essentials necessary for life. While we may experience a greater degree of security and comfort in the modern industrial world, our list of basic necessities seems to expand exponentially with developments in innovation. One of those modern lifelines would certainly be our smartphones. Smartphones tell us when to wake up, what kind of weather to expect and the quickest route to get to work on time – and that’s all before leaving the house. Let’s face it, without them many of us might just as well be lost in the Amazon. If you’re feeling brave this week and curious to see just how much you rely on your phone you can take part in in UNICEF’s Tap Project Challenge. UNICEF’s sponsors (Giorgio Armani and Acqua for Life) are providing one day of clean water to a child in need for every minute you don’t touch your phone. Just one minute! To participate use your mobile phone to get on the site, read the rules and begin. No sign up is necessary. When you start feeling the symptoms of phone withdrawal you can watch your screen for fun facts from UNICEF. The site will tell you about the success of the Tap Project, statistics on clean water availability, how many participants are taking the challenge in your state and the record to beat. There are 768 million people around the world without access to clean water. Take some time out today to put down your phone and use one of your modern-life necessities to provide the most essential element for survival. Let us know how long you went! The 43 team embraced the spirit of love today with the exchange of valentines and some heart-themed attire. We wish everyone a lovely Valentines Day and an even better President's day weekend. Here's our gift to you: Valentine's Day Fun Facts • In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine's Day. • The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. •Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine's Day in the U.S. • 15 percent of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day. If you don’t already have plans for tomorrow night with that special someone, you might end up celebrating Singles Awareness Day a.k.a. S.A.D. and that’s just sad. Thank goodness this year Valentine’s Day falls on the same weekend as President’s Day, which means instead of having just one Valentine you have 42 distinguished American leaders at your side. It’s impossible to be disappointed with so many friends. Let FDR remind you to embrace your inner thrill-seeker when he tells you “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Take an extra long bubble bath in honor of Taft who had his own custom tub fitted to his impressive physique. If you really just want some peace and quiet, there’s always good ol’ Silent Cal to sit by your side. Before you celebrate these noteworthy gentlemen, you should probably brush up on their interests and achievements – it’s a lot less creepy than stalking a would-be date’s Facebook page and you’re learning American history! Thankfully there are some helpful apps out there so we don’t doze off while reading a Wikipedia page. USA Presidents is a standard flashcard app that includes flashcards, quizzes, and fun trivia. There are also some more interesting apps out there like Roadside Presidents that informs you of all the nearby presidential landmarks or Presidents vs. Aliens that tests your presidential knowledge and rewards you with the power to ward of alien attack. If historical trivia isn’t your thing, but you still want to celebrate President’s Day there’s one more option. Apart from those 42 Commanders in Chief, there are quite a few Hollywood Presidents that have proven to be quite inspirational themselves. Use TheFind to check out amazing cinematic performances from Daniel Day-Lewis to Kevin Kline and even Jack Nicholson. They also have a great selection of documentaries. So enough of that S.A.D. the buck stops here. |
