Since being invented in 1854, elevators have not experienced any significant evolution, until now. A German tech company ThyssenKrupp is gearing up to reinvent this seemingly static technology. Its new MULTI elevators will be self-propelled by magnetic linear motor technology (same system used in maglev trains) allowing the elevator to travel both horizontally and vertically. The elevator will be able to accommodate wide or unusually shaped buildings, will no longer be limited by heights and will be able to operate in loops. MULTI will run on a system consisting of multiple cabins that will travel in a loop at about 11 mph, allowing passengers to catch a lift every 15 to 30 seconds. ThyssenKrupp’s CEO Andres Schierenbeck stated in a press release, “Per year, New York City office workers spend a cumulative amount of 16.6 years waiting for elevators, and 5.9 years in elevators.” As a result, one of the fundamental goals of inventing MULTI is to improve urban life. Another beneficial factor is the elevator will require less space than the traditional model, increasing a building’s available space by 25 percent. The company plans to have the first MULTI prototype running in a specially designed test tower at the end of 2016.
