According to research firm IDC, smartphone shipments increased by 38.4%. 1,004.2 million units were shipped in 2013 compared to 725.3 million units in 2012. According to IDC, large screens and low costs are the top trends driving smartphone growth. Demand for low-priced devices in developing markets like China and India pushed volume to cross the one billion unit milestone. Sub-$150 smartphones make up the majority of shipments in these countries, expanding the availability of smartphones to many. Companies focused on more expensive devices, such as Apple and Samsung, have the most to lose in these areas. Apple had the lowest year-on-year increase of all leading vendors despite having record shipment volume in the fourth quarter. It took 16 years to reach the one billion milestone of smartphone use worldwide. Growth in the U.S. will plateau within five to six years, according to IDC. However, the smartphone industry is growing dramatically and we’re still observing a huge demand for smartphones worldwide. Strategy Analytics predicts the next billion smartphones in use will be achieved by 2015. The Super Bowl is not just about the game anymore; it’s also about the ads, the halftime show and the social media reaction. Last Sunday’s Super Bowl was no exception, receiving major record-breaking attention on Twitter. This year’s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos racked up a total of 24.9 million tweets, topping last year’s Super Bowl at 24.1 million tweets. Percy Harvin’s 87-yard kickoff return to open 3rd quarter was the most tweeted moment of the game, peaking at 381,605 tweets per minute (TPM). It surpassed the most-tweeted event on record, Barack Obama’s Re-election at 327,452 TPM. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ performance featuring Bruno Mars also made it in the top five peak moments of the game at 215,540 TPM. With the Super Bowl as the most watched event on television in America, brands took advantage of this day to engage with their followers through social media. J.C. Penney’s social media strategy made headlines when it attempted to promote its mittens by getting a staffer to wear a pair while tweeting during the game. Viewers and other companies, such as Kia and Doritos, joined in on the conservation speculating if the person was intoxicated or if the account had been hacked. It left many debating whether they successfully leveraged the Super Bowl in order to gain social media attention.
You can check out more social media stats from the game here. With this year’s Super Bowl, it’s clear to see how important social media has become in shaping ways we engage, communicate and share information.

The people over at Coin understand the nuisance of a heavy, bulging wallet containing cash and cards shoved inside. Coin is a nifty little gadget that consolidates all of your credit, debit and even gift cards onto one single device. The Coin consists of a screen, which displays which card you are using to charge items on, a button to select which card to use, a magnetic strip to swipe and a Bluetooth low energy chip. To get card information onto the Coin, users will use the Coin app and a mobile credit card reader. Simply swipe your cards and the information is transferred over to your Coin. Sounds pretty easy to use, but what happens if you lose your Coin and all of the card information on it? Since it is connected to your smartphone using the Bluetooth low energy chip, the Coin app will alert you if your card is not in close distance to your phone. If the app realizes your Coin is not near, the Coin locks itself to protect all of your information. Thanks to this locking feature, if you ever permanently lose your Coin, you will not have to cancel all of your cards since your information is secure. It seems that Coin founder Kanishk Parashar has thought of everything to make the transaction process seamless. Currently, Coin is available to pre-order for $55 and the company has already reached their pre-order goal. If you’re interested in learning more about the product or ordering one for yourself you can check it out here. |
