This week, Monsoon Multimedia had big news as they announced a feature for their Vulkano Flow and eventually for the Blast, where users now have the capability to record TV content directly to their tablets and/or smartphones. Monsoon is the first company in the industry to allow iPad, iPhone Android users, and soon, BlackBerry users, to record programming directly to their devices. As PCMagazine (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2387375,00.asp) reports, "existing and proposed TiVo apps, as well as the SingBox, allow content to be streamed to external devices, not stored." Monsoon's Executive VP of Sales and Marketing, Colin Stiles, stated "Consumers are making smartphones and tables an essential part of their every day lives and are expecting to view and browse the TV content that they pay for at their leisure, no matter where they are in the world."
In order to record, the devices must be connected via Wi-Fi but Monsoon also offers an offline viewing feature. Once the content is on the device, it acts like a DVR with pause, rewind and fast forward features, making it easy for users to watch their content anywhere in the world so they never miss groundbreaking news or memorable sporting moments. Videos are encrypted to prevent pirating. Monsoon also provides an insufficient memory alert; an hour of media requires a gigabyte of storage. Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/monsoon-vulkano-blast-launches-dvr-to-mobile-feature-for-iphone/) states that some positive aspects of the new feature is that users no longer have to transfer shows from their hard drive to be able to stream them later; users can also re-watch their favorite shows and episodes.
