Known for combining technology, social media culture and startups, SXSW Interactive has become the place to preview the technology and ideas of tomorrow. This year’s 21st annual SXSW Interactive Festival had more than 30,000 attendees from a record 74 countries. In five days of presentations and panels, industry leaders and the brightest minds in emerging technology shared their ideas for the future. In case you missed it, here are some of the biggest highlights and trends from this year's SXSWi: Privacy and the fight against government surveillance NSA leaker Edward Snowden and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange remotely addressed the conference in separate, high-profile events. Snowden, one of the most wanted men in America, fled to Russia in fear of arrest but risked exposing his location to speak at SXSWi. They both addressed the audience to create products to protect Web users’ privacy. SXSW Accelerator helps uncover amazing new startups Some of the best startups were honored at the inaugural SXSW Accelerator Awards ceremony. There were nine categories total ranging from social, most innovative and the company who has done the most with least. Winners are Samba.me, The Eye Tribe and Sensible Baby, respectively. Wearable tech promises to be the next big thing From smartwatches, Google Glass and fitness bands, wearable technology is the newest explosive tech trend. Silicon Valley’s Skully made the biggest buzz by winning the Accelerator Award in this category. The augmented-reality motorcycle helmet has a 180-degree rear-view camera that allows riders to see the road in every direction. There was no “next Twitter” Twitter was the startup that took SXSWi by storm in 2007 and remains the conference’s biggest hit. SXSWi director Hugh Forrest says the social media revolution has “plateaued a little bit.” Despite not having the “next Twitter” at this year’s SXSWi, the conference provided a big-picture analysis of the future and showcased the best ideas and cutting edge technologies.
