We’ve all found ourselves there – some more than others – trying to perfect a kitchen masterpiece. Be it a refined tomato sauce or hearty stew, one might wonder what am I missing? Is it too much salt? Not enough garlic? What is it?! Some creative entrepreneurs may have found the missing ingredient – but can you stomach it? Grandma had her wits about her when she made her “Everything but the kitchen sink” Soup; she was resourceful, practical and cost effective. Now a design student out of Iceland is urging us to throw in the little guys buzzing around our ripening fruit bowls. That’s right. Fly Factory, a new appliance, could be coming to a restaurant near you. This stainless steal spectacular is divided into three chambers, one for breeding, one serving as a nursery for the larvae, and one to store the surely delectable puddings and pates that the flies are turned into. Not only is the Fly Factory cost-efficient, it also helps restaurants become more environmentally responsible as it turns uneaten leftovers into food for hungry bugs, who in turn create powerful compost. Have you lost your appetite? Bugs are in lots of food products, remember the uproar when it was ‘discovered’ that Starbucks used crushed beetle shells to color strawberry Frappucinos? Even the UN is urging us to try some of the 1,900 edible insects at our disposal. You’d better clear off some space on your counters between your KitchenAid gadgets soon because you’re already behind the trend. Take a culinary adventure; we’ve heard it tastes just like chicken.

With over 645,750,000 people using Twitter, it’s easy to get carried away in the hoopla of followers. Since users can seamlessly click the “follow” button next to someone’s name when exploring the site, it is likely you will end up following more people than intended. When this becomes the case, you may realize that you do not really care to hear what some people have to say every time they tweet, especially when they have 25 tweets per hour. Now, thanks to the mute option, looking through your Twitter feed has become much more enjoyable. Twitter has introduced mute so that you can filter out whose posts appear on your home feed. Mute lets users selectively turn off the posts of certain people they follow, without completely unfollowing them. Muting the users will stop their posts from showing up in your timeline, including their own posts and native retweets, which also means no push notifications or SMS notices from them either. No one knows the mute is active except for you, and it’s reversible at any time. This ensures you can still continue to follow muted users should you need to keep in touch via direct message or for other purposes. You can check out the new feature by logging into your Twitter and muting users through their individual tweets or their profile page. Happy muting! Mother’s Day is just a couple days away. Last month Greenpeace issued a report (Clicking Clean: How Companies are Creating the Green Internet) on tech companies use of clean(er) energy sources. Amazon received the worst ranking for their Amazon Web Services (AWS), which runs on coal, gas and nuclear power to sustain data centers. The findings from this report have prompted a new Greenpeace campaign that puts pressure on tech industry giants to adopt more sustainable practices. Campaign tactics have been eccentric in true Greenpeace fashion. Following the release of the report, the organization flew a blimp over Silicon Valley and singled out targets including Amazon, Netflix, Twitter and Pintrest (AWS users) urging them to #ClickClean. Today activists held a demonstration outside of Pintrest’s HQ in San Francisco, and they did it with coffee and cupcakes in hand. The campaign evidently seems to be one that uses the moderately effective mantra of killing with kindness, so to speak. Greenpeace spokesman, David Pomerantz explained, “It’s not that they’re bad companies. We love their services. What we want to point out is that there’s no reason they can’t be leading the way.” Amazon has denied the claims, Netflix has yet to comment, and Twitter and Pintrest are agreeing with the sentiments – but saying you agree and taking action are two very different things. As consumers and web enthusiasts, we have an opportunity to call for the adoption of cleaner energy sources. Apple, Facebook and Google have all pledged to power their Internet operations with 100 percent renewable energy. Hopefully it won’t be long before Amazon and friends join the club. Earlier this week, Google released a video showing its self-driving cars in action on the streets of Mountain View, California. In the video, the autonomous cars are put to the test and are able to make decisions based on what’s happening around them in real-time, whether it be navigating through a construction zone or turning at a busy intersection with pedestrians and cyclists. Over the last year, the self-driving car project shifted focus onto mastering city street driving, which is much more complex than freeway driving as it contains more potential hazards. Now, the improved software can detect hundreds of distinct objects simultaneously while being able to navigate through various situations smoothly.
